This is an oldie, yet continues to plague log files of the world over! I figured I'd spread the love as I see it regularly on Domino servers (much to the annoyance of their administrators!) Begin CD to MIME Conversion (Process: Router As if it wan't bad enough that the log file told us when it BEGAN, it then had to create a whole seperate entry to tell us when it ended. Sigh. These notifications can be removed by the following Notes.ini parameter: Converter_Log_Level=10 The router must be restarted for this parameter to take affect. For more information, read the IBM Technote, How to disable logging when a message is converted. Ah. The log looks so much better now.

Stern said, "It's very cool but i don't know how to use it." Regular listeners will know that Howard seems to always feign struggles with new technology, but he did call the iPad "the future." Stern sounds like he needs to spend a little bit more time with his new iPad and begin to undo the ill-habits and user interface assumptions from his years of suffering with Microsoft's shiteous Windows. Stern's dependence upon Lotus Notes has kept him from a better life with an iPhone in the past. But, accessibility to Lotus Notes has always been possible through their "webmail-like" portal (using Apple's Mobile Safari browser) and, of course, there's now a fully-functional Lotus Notes client app for iPhone/iPad..
Unknown to many, IBM/Lotus already produce a Sametime MIDlet, and they ship it with their Lotus Sametime Server software. These MIDlets are primarilly aimed at Nokia 'E' series (Symbian based) handsets. All we need to do is package that Lotus created MIDlet into a format that Android understands (i.e. an Android .apk package file), and install it along with a free J2ME environment to launch the MIDlet in. Here is how you can quickly and very easily make your own Android Lotus Sametime client.
A TechNote has come to my attention concerning "Run as Admin" for Smart Upgrades. From the TechNote:
Run the IBM Lotus Smart Upgrade Run As wizard (SUSETRUNASWIZARD.EXE) to create an executable file (SURUNAS.EXE) that Notes client users can then run to upgrade their Notes 6.5.x or 7.0.1. Lotus Notes Client users can use the Smart Upgrade Run As (SURunas) feature to upgrade to a newer Notes client release. Smart Upgrade Run As is designed for Notes client users who do not have administrator privileges but who still need to periodically update their Notes client software. Notes client users with administrator privileges on their local computer can still use Smart Upgrade.

Thanks, JYR.
I am glad to see that Jean-Yves has joined the blogosphere. He is a valued contributor to the developerWorks:Lotus forums where he usually unearths the perfect TechNote that will resolve an issue. He tells me that he has recently been added to PlanetLotus, so we will all be notified of his updates. Welcome, my friend, to the conversation.

Guardian Media Group (GMG), one of Google’s key corporate users in the UK, will be “demanding answers” from the search firm over the loss of its online email service yesterday. GMG has already switched away from Microsoft Office on local PCs to Google Apps, and has plans to go further – ditching Lotus Notes for Google Mail by the end of this year after completing the move of 2,400 users to the online word processing and calendars function.
Dear Lotus Notes - I don't like you. Not only is it unintuitive, I find out today that it's nearly impossible to get it on my iPhone. And I do not jest when I say "nearly impossible," because it is.
Not sure about the new Social Media sites? Want to know how people are leveraging them specifically in the Lotus Notes and Domino space? From Twitter, blogs, BleedYellow, PlanetLotus, and more, see how easy it is to be part of the conversation. Attendees will learn about the strengths and weakenesses of each, how they can solve real business issues, and can be leveraged to get help from some of the best Lotus Notes and Domino minds in the world. The session will include in-depth, live demonstations of each social media site, including some tools to make the experience easier. As a bonus, attendees will leave with a guide to the sites and some of the Lotus Notes and Domino people that use them.
Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 plays a prominent cultural role in the world today. In particular, the music from the fourth movement (Ode to Joy) was rearranged by Herbert von Karajan into what is now called the Anthem of Europe. Further testament to its prominence is that an original manuscript of this work sold in 2003 for $3.3 million USD at Sotheby's, London. Stephen Roe, the head of Sotheby's manuscripts department, described the symphony as "one of the highest achievements of man, ranking alongside Shakespeare's Hamlet and King Lear."
On an iPad with multiple email accounts (Gmail, Yahoo & Exchange Active Sync) you are able to forward an Enterprise email received in Exchange Active Sync out through a personal email account. This has been reproduced multiple times with the following configuration. The order of operations does not seem to matter.
It doesn't seem to be something that's getting a lot of publicity on the web but would appear to be a significant risk for companies. I don't think it's possible to limit iPads to only corporate mail either natively or using any 3rd party management software, so that leaves the only solution to be some sort of encrypted sandbox for corporate mail along the lines of Good Technology or similar. Unless you can force some sort of persistent VPN through some other mgmt software and monitor all traffic ... doesn't seem ideal but maybe it would work.
One way to help re-energize your career, especially for information technology workers, is to gain new skills, new certifications and meet new people. Put yourself out there, network and invest in your future. "Learning new skills or technologies, meeting new people and facing new challenges [are great ways] to keep your mind off the fact that you aren't in love with your job," said Lauren Milligan of ResuMayDay.com in the same Careerpath.com article.
My source, who shall remain nameless due to NDAs with RIM and partners, tells me that the company is currently planning to cease distribution of BES Express for Lotus Domino, though no details on timing are available at this point. RIM is expected to continue offering BES Express for Microsoft Exchange. Why RIM would discontinue one of its enterprise-oriented offerings when its position in the corporate smartphone world is one of the company's true advantages over competitors is a bit of mystery. But perhaps RIM simply didn't see the uptake in BES Express for Domino that it expected or needed.
Q: Is there any way to see if a group is not being used? A: There is no current tool or feature to check this for you, but there are a couple of tricks you can use. You can make a backup of the group and delete it or rename it. See if anyone mentions that it is no longer usable. You can also set security on it and if anyone tries to use it, it will show up on the Domino console log.
Caveats to be aware of before implementing DAOS There are also some things that must be aware of before implementing DAOS: Your backup process must change. When attachments are initially stored in the OS, the directory of NLO files needs to be backed up, in addition to the databases on the Domino server that you were backing up before. When performing the backup, it's a good idea to back up your databases first, then the NLO files. If you back up the NLO files first, but a new message comes in with an attachment later, it is possible that the email would be backed up, but the related NLO would not. If copying/replicating a DAOS-managed database from one server to another (or to a client) where DAOS is not enabled, the attachments are re-added to the NSF, so it will be much larger. Make sure that the new destination has the necessary disk space to handle the database with all of the attachments added in. NLO files should not be copied (at the OS level) from one server to another. The files are encrypted by the Domino server ID. If they are moved to another server where a different server ID file is used, the NLO files are useless.
It's been almost two months now since Matt and I were fortunate enough to go to Lotusphere 2009! in Orlando, FL. We really had the time of our lives and met some incredible people. We spent the next few weeks telling our story (our first podcast!) and compiling seemingly every bit of information about us online. We wanted to see what people thought of our presentation and make sure everything was positive. The response we got from the Lotus community was incredible. I would have never believed it had I not seen it in action.
Question Is the Lotus Notes client supported on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008 Terminal Services? You are unclear as to whether Lotus Notes clients are supported in a Terminal environment on Windows Terminal server without Citrix MetaFrame installed. In this scenario, the Notes client would be installed on a Windows 2003 terminal client and on Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services. Answer No, the Notes client is not designed or supported to run in this scenario (using a Windows Terminal client and Windows Server Terminal Services). A Notes client can run on a Windows 2003 or 2008 Terminal Server only if Citrix MetaFrame is used as well. While Windows Server Terminal Services emulation with Lotus Notes can work, this configuration is not supported.
1) After installing 8.5.1, search for the notes, ini and it should not appear in the windows folder. Delete it if you found it there. 2) The notes.ini file should appear in c:\documents and settings\All users\application data\lotus\notes\data\ and the content in it should be: (please note the actual path should be according to your environment) [Notes] KitType=1 SharedDataDirectory=C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Lotus\Notes\Data\Shared InstallType=6 3) edit the following registry entries: [HKLM\Software\Lotus\Notes\DataPath] Remove the value. [HKLM\Software\Lotus\Notes\MultiUser] Change the value from 0 to 1. [HKLM\Software\Lotus\Notes\8.0\DataPath] Remove the value. [HKLM\Software\Lotus\Notes\8.0\MultiUser] Change the value from 0 to 1.
Quite honestly, as someone who makes her living off of SharePoint, I don't spend a lot of time learning to use other products. (I often say, there's no point for a carpenter to learn how to lay bricks, unless he wants to become a brick layer.) However, several months ago I was re-introduced to Lotus by an IBM rep in the area. He very strongly insisted that Lotus is anything but dead, and in fact, IBM is in fact dumping huge amounts of money into the product. (No doubt, with the popularity of SharePoint, IBM realized there's clearly a market for its product.) Although I have been brought into more than one client to replace legacy Lotus apps, I wonder how many people in the next year or two will be brought in to replace SharePoint apps with Lotus apps.
Rumors have been floating around campus about a change from IBM's Lotus Notes e-mail system to the more high tech Google mail (Gmail) accounts. Lotus Notes users have been complaining of not having enough storage, so UDit has decided to look into a new e-mail system. "We feel that offering students an increase in storage is advantageous for the students," said Susan McCabe, assistant CIO, financial and administrative operations and director of systems integration. The benefits of switching will ultimately be the maximized mail storage that Gmail offers to users. The idea is still fresh, and there are still questions unanswered about the switch.
I am very new with IBM Lotus Notes Developer. I want to know wt is the future of this technology.I have switched two companys but their is migration form lotus notes to other technology. I have chance on lotus project.
You can view Ed Brill's 2009 Lotusphere presentation where he laid out the Lotus Roadmap: http://www.slideshare.net/edbrill/lotusphere-200-inv102-lotus-notes-and-domino-strategy-2009-presentation If you are running Domino 8.5.x, you will see many exciting features of the Notes client as well as Designer. Widgets, XPages, the UI, etc. If you want Lotus in the cloud, you can do that. If you want an appliance to run Lotus, you can do that, too. If you want it on your smartphone, that's in there too (and free). IBM has really been investing money and time in the product, and it shows. Even Lotus marketing is getting much better. Many of those migrations may have been from older versions of Notes/Domino. I do not see too many organizations leaving Lotus after the decision makers get a look at the current version of Notes. And understand what it is that they have.
IBM Lotus Notes 8.5 is now available for Mac OS X computers, boasting a user interface that lets users access Notes' full messaging and collaboration features from one screen. The new release also interoperates with Web calendar applications from Google, Yahoo and other public Web calendars, allowing users to display their Lotus Notes work calendar and their personal Internet calendar on the same screen. IBM claims this is its attempt to make Notes more social -- integrating work and play -- as it seeks to compete with Microsoft.
"Notes 8.5 has allowed our Mac users to make full use of a non-Microsoft environment with all the advances of the latest Notes functionality," said Mark Calleran, Chief Information Officer, The Salvation Army, International Headquarters. Discovery Communications is another leading organization, among others, using Lotus Notes 8.5 for the Macintosh.
Domino Attachment Object Storage only stores an attachment once per server, regardless of how many instances exist in user inboxes."Prior to 8.5, if you sent an email to 20 people all of them had a local copy of the file, which meant it took up 20 times the storage space," explained Adams. The new way of handling attachments also has the knock-on benefit of boosting overall server performance, and decreasing the time required to back up user mail accounts. Another new feature, ID Vault, helps firms to manage user IDs by centralising them onto a server. This makes life easier for users who access email from more than one computer, as well as making it easier for admins to back up ID files. For developers, XPages brings to Notes/Domino many of the features of modern web applications based on Ajax, according to IBM.
The other interesting effect of being at a show like Macworld Expo is that many of our conversations at the booth have been with end-users. More than once, we saw someone call back to a colleague in the office asking "what version do we run? No, it doesn't look like that!" Even the Financial Times journalist tied that into his story. If our presence at a show like Macworld Expo helps drive Notes 8.x adoption, that can only be a good thing for everyone. This is why we made sure to tie the Domino-side story of DAOS and cost savings into the press release, even though the theme was the client. IT admins, management, and CFOs will all like the message around the full Notes/Domino 8.x suite -- tremendous improvements in productivity, flexibility to use desktops of choice, a great browser-based approach for desktops and mobile devices, and significant reduction in operational costs.
