Interesting IBM TechNote, for as much as I work with Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, iTouch), I've not seen this behavior.

Problem
There are various situations where a user of an Apple device either is unable to delete a message, or the Trash object appears to be missing on the Apple device. An Apple user may also notice that trash items on the device do not coincide with the trash items in the Notes client.
. . . When comparing trash messages on the Apple device to trash messages in the Notes client, a user may notice that these items are not in sync.
. . . While attempting to move a message to the trash or delete a message, the device may display an error that it is unable to move the message to the trash.

Mostly experience the third scenario - loss of connection.
In that case two things can happen after the error message:
1. The deleted message re-appears on the next sync
2. The message doesn't appear in the All-Inbox anymore (I use two traveler accounts running on different servers an mail accounts) but can be still found changing to the appropriate Inbox.
Never experienced the other issues
