Location : Lotusphere 2008
I've sat in my share of sessions through the years, always seeing those that Live Blog. Well, now it is time to add my name to that list.
As I sit here (left of the stage, six rows back, on the aisle) waiting for the start of Lotus Salon 2.08, I can't help but wonder: "How am I going to juggle blogging and picture taking?"
Announcement: "Please keep your notebooks, PDA's and cell phones on. Prizes may be given for the most creative ringtone."
It sounds like people are changing their ringtones. :-)
"Golden Age of the Geeks"
Daniel Sieberg is the facilitator, CBS News reporter. Microphones are placed through the ballroom for the audience to ask questions.
Panelists: Ze Frank, Jane McDonnegal, and
Ze Frank - Presentation is a lot like The Daily Show. Very funny. Ze is NOT a "normal" 'Sphere speaker. ANd that is good.
Golan Levin. Artist that works using the computer and social networks; probing communications. A different approach to numbers, showing that people are not as unique as you may think.
Jane McGonigal. Game designer. "Reality is broken." Doing real time work in very large groups (think of WoW). Giving names to gamer profiles, and how you are percieved on the internet. A game where you live without oil. An online game that extended to the real world. 1600 people lived without oil for a month. And, using Web 2.0, they communicated their feelings, changed their lives. Simply amazing.
Now, open for questions. Bashful people. Including me.
Okay, we now have some questions. "Is art important?" Great question that has opened up the panelists. The person has hit on their sweet spot. Passionate responses. Jane's response? "The reason we have games is because life is crap."
Ze Frank - Instead of improving AI, we should be looking to improve "RI." Real intelligence.
"Do bloggers have a life?" Ze responds. "Not focused on the content, more people are making their ideas external to themselves. It actually brings people together, similar ideas, similar interests.
Question: "Discuss the mashup between the internet and the politcal process."
The questions are . . . different than what you would expect from a usual session. It is bringing out a side of attendees that would surprise you.
The presentations do not have the IBM stamp on them. It's . . . refreshing. This session is one that cannot be missed.
