The last time I was in the library, looking at the new releases of books and music, I got to thinking about how "inconvenient" it is to find the new materials at the library. I mean, you have to actually visit the building to see what is new, and even then, you won't get the full picture. What if a new DVD isn't on the shelves? Or a new book is sitting on a table in the library somewhere. How many items are you missing?
On the way out, I thought about RSS and the library.
Today, I called our library's Technology Manager. After assuring him that I am not trying to sell some service to them, that I am only a patron and taxpayer, that happens to be in information technology, he told me that yes, in the next update of their website, they will have RSS feeds for new materials. How cool is that? Then a search on Google turned up 1,400,000 hits on RSS and libraries. What an excellent use of RSS.
Think of all of the other public entities that could leverage this, your Police and Fire Departments, City Council, Mayors Office. Push the Council Meeting Minutes out, instead of forcing people to navigate your website. Let the Police and Fire push out local traffic problems, emergency calls, and the like. Your Service departments could use it to notify the citizens of roadwork, leaf and garbage pickups, and more. This could be really popular and extremely specific.
And you have built in demand.

@Duffbert - An RSS feed from my library will probably cause me trouble, as well. But that is a good thing.
