The title of this entry has hit us again. Since I can never seem to find the TechNote, and as a service to you, dear reader, here is one answer to this little dilemma. I have also found, in some cases, that this has something to do with the resolution on the users screen. You may want to reduce it, if this doesn't help.
Technote (from the IBM/Lotus Knowledgebase)
Problem
If you close a Lotus Notes 6.x client and then immediately re-launch it, Microsoft Windows Task Manager shows two Nlnotes processes running. When this condition occurs, if you send an e-mail message with an attachment, the actual file is not included with the message. Instead, only a graphic (technically, a picture) of the icon for the file is sent with the message. This problem may be more common when you forward a mail with an attachment.
Typical steps that reproduce the problem:
1. Launch the Notes client and send a message with a fairly large attachment (~15 MB).
2. Close the Notes client and then launch it immediately (within approximately 5 seconds).
3. Check the Windows Task Manager; you see two Nlnotes processes running.
4. If you now attempt to forward or reply to a message with an attachment, a picture of the icon is received instead of the file attachment.
Solution
This issue has been reported to Quality Engineering as SPR# JPIK5TLT8R and HTAA5QNARN and has been addressed in Notes 6.0.5 and 6.5.4.
Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Domino Release 6.0.5 / 6.5.4 MR fix list (available at http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/lotus):
Editor
SPR# HTAA5QNARN - When forwarding a mail message which included an attachment, the file was not attached. Only the icon was inserted. This occurred when the file ~editclp.ncf, located in the temporary folder, was locked.
Attachments
SPR# JPIK5TLT8R - Fixed a problem when an attachment's images were forwarded, instead of the complete attachments, with the mail message.
To work around the issue in previous releases, close the Notes client, and wait 20 to 50 seconds before restarting it. This wait clears a temporary file named ~editclp.ncf, thus allowing you to forward attachments without problem.
If the attachments issue continues, close any launched attachments that are still open in their associated applications. If that does not correct the problem, close the Notes client, search your system for the file ~editclp.ncf, and then delete the file.
The file ~editclp.ncf is a temporary file that Notes uses when working with attachments. In certain cases, this file is not deleted as it should be and therefore gets locked. Because the file is locked, Notes cannot use it again to complete the attachment process.
For similar symptoms with a Notes R5 client, refer to "Launched Attachments: Temporary Files Are Not Deleted After Exiting the Notes Client" (#1100416 ).
