I've never really seen anything at Verizon that made me want to upgrade to something better. Not even a BlackBerry. But then the Android phones started arriving. People that have them talk very favorably of them. But still I waited; perhaps the iPhone would come to Verizon. Then, a client was going through an evaluation of their mobile devices. They had a Motorola Droid for a two week evaluation, which required me to install Touchdown on the device and connect it to their Lotus Notes mail using Traveler. That whole process was relatively easy. It was after that I started to seriously work with the device and the more I did, the more I liked it, the apps, and the widgets.
After a little research, I decided upon the HTC Incredible.
As it is rather popular, I have to wait to receive the phone for about 10 days. But once I have it, I will bid a fond farewell to my time with Palm.

Very nice - enjoy!
I have large hands and poor eyes, so I'm leaning toward the Droid X.
We'll see what develops between now & December.

I too have been a longtime Palm user (I still have a working Palm Pilot, III, Zire 72, Treo, and my current personal phone, the Pre). I also have the iPhone for work.
And while there are things about the Pre that are definitely better than the iPhone, there are others which have caused me to at least begin thinking of getting rid of the Palm platform. I have not done the research on the Android platform, and not being an Apple fanboy (like them, just don't love them) I have begun eyeing the Droids.
Hope your transition goes well!

I retired my Treo 700p earlier this year for a Motorola Droid. I'd waited 6 month for the Pre to hit Verizon, and by the time it did IBM announced native Traveler support for the droid was imminent. We did get the missus a Pre Plus when her contract was up last month. Its a lovely phone with a bigger app store than I expected, but my fat thumbs wanted a wide format keyboard.
Both are fine devices, but I expect more opportunities to use Droid @ work than WebOS.

Good decision. Perhaps you will miss a real keyboard, not a virtual one.

It's funny how these things work. My co-worker and I have had many long conversations at lunch about the topic of hand helds and their OS's. We've broken it down that the current hand held OS war is no different then the computer world of the early 90's.
Android - The Android/Google OS is the DOS of the day. It can run on many different devices and is pretty solid. You are not just stuck to one piece of hardware.
iOS - Apple is Apple. Closed environment. Not much has changed.
WebOS - The modern day Amiga. Like the Amiga, it has a loyal following, but acceptance of it is just not getting the masses excited. Perhaps one day, but right now, it's an uphill battle.
Just my two cents. I may even blog about this myself

HP/Palm absolutely, critically, HAVE to get new hardware out the door very very soon.
And the hardware has to be as good as the iPhone, Droid X, Incredible, Galaxy S class.
I'm hoping, but not planning on that happening.
Kind of a good thing contract issues keep me tied up until December.... I'll get to see what happens.

@Mitch: It was your blog post that gave me the answers to the Droid and Traveler. Thank You.
@Craig: I looked real hard at the X, but I felt that it was much too large. I hope that I haven't made a mistake. <laughs> I really wanted to go to the Pre, but the lack of applications and it's position way back in the pack scared me.
@Brad: I'll do another post after it arrives and I connect it to my Domino mail. Kind of like a follow-up to Mitch's post.
@Albert: I had much more success typing on the Droid than I did on the iPhone, so I don't think the virtual keyboard will be a big deal. But I will miss my dedicated QWERTY keyboard. Could have gone with the Motorola Droid, but the Incredible was just . . . better.
@Andy and @Mike: Thanks for the comments.

Gregg - just remember Traveler for Android is coming, it won't ship with 8.5.2, but it is currently in beta and will arrive at some point after 8.5.2 ships

I ditched my Palm Treo 650 2 years ago in favor of a Nokia E71 and then recently ditched that for an HTC EVO Android device. I had been a loyal Palm user since the very beginning. Starting with the Treo one of my goals had been syncing with my Notes calendar, but I've had a spotty record on that front.
Commontime's mNotes worked on the Treo for a bit and then an upgrade broke everything and I never bothered to fix it. When the Blackberry Storm came out I got one thinking I could stay touchscreen but finally get Notes syncing working well, but quickly returned it because, well, it sucked. The Nokia and Traveler worked like a dream for Notes syncing, but I finally got tired of the tiny screen, slow and dated OS, and the constant crashing.
By this point I had overcome my bias against a pure touchscreen device and was itching to try either an iPhone or Android device. Suffice it to say I love my EVO, and considering the iPhone 4's antenna issues I have no regrets going Android. In addition I am so used to the larger screen that it is painful to use my wife's iPod Touch. The multimedia capabilities mean I finally use my device for playing music etc., and am even having fun with games. The apps are pretty good and getting better.
As for Notes syncing on Android, I had the Touchdown thing working for a few weeks before the Traveler for Android beta came out, and frankly I am having problems now with syncing. Hopefully those issues will be resolved with a new update soon. If not I may revert to using Touchdown until they are.
In the meantime I have a tough time imagining any scenario where I would ever again buy a Palm or Nokia device as I just don't see those platforms catching up given the momentum of the Apple and Android platforms.
Blackberry also seems increasingly unappealing, considering the BES costs, the limited usefulness for multimedia, no appealing touchscreen devices, etc. It's continued relevance seems dependent entirely on the enterprise, where it is often "the standard" much like Internet Explorer, which many folks avoid if at all possible but often are forced to use for enterprise apps that don't work on Firefox.
Now, bring on the Android tablets!
