I'm doing one of those MDA / Jerry's Kids fundraisers, and last week the admins decided that a Monday from 10am - 4pm was a good time to take down the site for maintenance. Of course this was about an hour after I send 100+ e-mails for donations.....
It does defy belief that an admin, any admin big or small, does not take into account the people they serve when performing maintenance.

@Duffbert - yeah, I was thinking that, too. However, wouldn't "clustering" be something you might want to consider? 
@Jamie - amazing what a little communication can do (or some sort of Change Management). Not *all* admins view their user community with disdain.
