A few weeks ago, my client sends me a link to a particular Forbes article that has been forwarded around by the managers. I make some pithy comments on it, point the managers to some threads on Christopher Byrne's site as well as Ed Brill's. And I add the Workplace and Domino technical strategy. Nothing happens, until a week before the ND7 Live Event. Then I provide them with an "Executive Summary" of Workplace and Domino. They come back from the event. And what did we do? We downloaded ND7 and Workplace. Both will be up on test servers in about a week. IBM/Lotus, you did very well! The managers are very interested, the Domino people are excited about R7, and you also drove interest in 'Sphere.
What did I take away from this? First, in response to all of the whining (and yes, I can say that) over at Ed's site on "advertising and marketing"? Make plans NOW to attend one of these events. And don't just you go, Mr. Domino Administrator or Ms. Domino Developer. TAKE YOUR MANAGER. It is an eye opening experience. Trust me on this. Second, it seems to me, that the work that the IBM/Lotus is doing on getting the word out, does work, with the proper audience. Funny, how that works, huh? Next, take the time to read up on Workplace. You may not be asked about it now, but it sure looks like the message is getting out to the elusive decision makers. You may not think so, but have you asked these people about it? They may already have heard about it, and will look to you for answers. Finally, R5 goes off support in just a couple of days. R7 is here. Download R7, install it, play with it. Many people have already upgraded to it, with as much effort as any Domino upgrade. When management comes calling for answers or thoughts, I hope that you have some for them. :-)
And make your reservations for 'Sphere.
