A while ago, I had a post about creating your own Sametime Client for Android. Little did I know that a company, Conundrum Software, would find that post and create a Sametime client, which is freely available for download. Soon, they will have a Sametime client for Apple. Using their app, I was able to connect to my BleedYellow account, send/recieve IM's, and access my Buddy List. This will show you how I accomplished this using the QuipIM client for Android. At the end of the post, I have provided two documents, given to me by Conundrum Software; an Android User Guide and a document addressing security concerns.
The first step was to find the application in the Android Market. A search for "quipim" brought me to the application. A couple of clicks and it was installed on my Android phone (HTC Incredible).
Once installed, the next step is to add an account. Open the QuipIM application. Click on Menu - Add Account. You will see a screen similar to this:
Enter the host name, your User Name, and password. Click "Save Account."
You should now see something similar to this:
Touch the Account, and you are presented with some options. Touch "Connect" and QuipIM will attempt to connect to the account.
If your account credentials are good, you should see something similar to this, showing that you have connected to the Sametime server and that you are available for chat:
Now that you are connected, take a look at your Buddy List. Touch "Buddy List." You will see something similar to this:
Be patient, the list takes a while to load. From what Conundrum Software has told me, the time to load is also predicated on your wireless connectivity. You want a good, solid signal. And some patience. Eventually, you will see something similar to this:
Since you have your Buddy List loaded, you can now select someone and start chatting.
To change your status, go back to the Accounts page. Touch your active account. You will be presented with an "Account Options" page. Touch "Change My Status."
This screen, as you may guess, allows you to select one of the status options or enter your own. When done, tap "OK." You've changed your status.
By touching the Menu button on your Android device, you will be presented with another menu. Within this menu, you will be given three choices, "Add Account," "Preferences," and "Quit." Touching Preferences, provides you with three options, Automatic Log Out, Notification Sound, and Notification Lights. Make adjustments as you see fit. The screen looks similar to this:
The final option is "History." This tab will show you, well, your Sametime Chat history. The screen will look similar to this:
Touching one of the entries will bring up the chat for your review.
Other than the delay waiting for my Buddy List to load, this is a really good Sametime Client for your Android device; easy to install, easy to configure, easy to use.
All of the screen shots were taken from my HTC Incredible, using the instructions found here. A nice side benefit to using QuipIM was forcing me to find and install the tools to allow me to create screenshots from the Android. Now if only someone created an app to that so that others wouldn't have to go through that procedure . . . .
