Having two boys means that I get subjected
to the summer blockbuster movies. You know the type; large explosions,
a bunch of eye-candy, and 2 hours of crappy plot and even worse story.
Even with the fact that they know my feelings on those movie, they still
asked me how I liked Transformers
2. In two words: "It sucked."
Actually, they couldn't believe that I said that as they really enjoyed
it. But for me, that was time that I will never get back.
However, I can now attend the next "blockbuster" with them. I know that no matter how bad the story or over the top the action might be (all CGI, most likely), I can think back to the wonderful movie experience I had when I took them to see the best film of the year, The Hurt Locker.
This film follows an Army Bomb Disposal unit through Iraq. While they occasionally get to disarm unexploded ordnance, for the most part they are called in to defuse Improvised Explosive Devices (IED). While this is what they have been trained to do, in Iraq this task is made more difficult by the many people watching. One, or more, may be waiting for the appropriate time to detonate the bomb, killing the soldier as well as others in the blast area. The characters provide more depth when the camera follows them during their down time. Here, you learn more about their home life, their hopes and fears, and their mental state. All of this adds to the story, creating more tension for the viewer, as the soldiers go about their tasks in the field.
This is a film that keeps the tension and suspense levels so high that you will remain in your seat for the duration of the film. By using hand held cameras, the film makers create a documentary feel to many of the scenes, and bring you up close and personal with the characters and their situations. In many of those scenes, you feel as though you are a part of the film, scanning the crowd for possible insurgents, feeling the stress of the situations along with the characters. Yes there are explosions and gun fire But there is also character development, a well developed story, and an outstanding plot. The Hurt Locker is a film you cannot miss.
