First session after the OGS.
Domino 8.5 highlights:
1. Reduction of storage costs - 20-40% storage savings with compression
2. Simplification of ID management
3. Modernization of the development environment
Notes Shared Login
1. Reduction of number of passwords for users
2. Removes the Notes password prompt. Makes Notes login transparent to the users
3. Easy to manage and synchronize passwords
Notes ID Vault
1. Reset forgotten passwords
2. Recover corrupted/damaged ID files
3. Synchronize IDs across multiple workstations.
DAOS
1. Removes attachments from mail file and places them in a DAOS catalog
2. 1 copy of attachment is stored on disk
3. The default attachment size is 32K, which can be changed.
4. Files in the DAOS Catalog can be encrypted, providing more security
5. Admins get much faster backups and Compacts. Sometimes an 85% reduction.
6. Low I/O on the server.
DCT
1. Extends autonomic work introduced in R6, R7, and R8.
2. Runs from the Notes client
3. Auto updates are done outside of Domino
4. Scheduled or manual scans
5. Runs on R7 servers and up.
What's this? Development stuff in a Domino session? :-)
XPages: localization of the applications (languages), separates the data from the UI, and multiple sources of data can be shown on one page. Next for XPages:
1. On mobile devices
2. Improve performance
3. Tag cloud out of the box
4. New data sources: XML, REST, SOAP, and Relational
5. Get XPages to the Notes client
Directory independence in Release 8.5.x. Initial hit is Active Directory. Domino internals being converted to using new APIs in R8.5.x.
Continue to exploit DAOS.
1. Put large e-mail bodies in DAOS
2. Optimization of network operations. Example: Don't send known attachments from server to server during replication.
3. Use of age-based DAOS migration. Allow older attachments from older servers to be consolidated on a single server.
SPNEGO - Microsoft login credentials to be used for Domino authentication.
Optimizations from LotusLive. Lower costs, enhance administration.
If you are an administrator, you need to investigate and leverage DAOS. There are many sessions on this at Lotusphere 2009 and for good reason.
Questions from the audience:
First question is about a Mac/Linux Admin client. They want some feedback on this, so be sure to stop in the Labs. 64-bit platforms: Linux will be next, then Solaris. Not sure of timeframe, but in the 8.5 codestream. A lot of demand for this, so it has their attention. Data compression: of loading of compression to other servers, instead of having one server do all of the work. Anticipate this feature in a "reasonable" timeframe. All compression is done at the server, where the data resides. But Lotus sees an opportunity for more performance gains in this area. DAOS - is a database feature. Will this be available on Quickr? The answer is yes. Orphaned attachments? Keep reference counts in the DAOS catalog. Deletions are stored then timed for removal so that there is the chance that the object reappears. Another question on compression, in a mixed environment. Again, kept at the storage level. DAOS and legal ramifications. Compact and disable DAOS, will put those attachments back in the original data store.
And that's it.
