Location : Cleveland, OH
Blue Man Group. Dan Akroyd. The OGS has started and the excitement level is high.
Focus is on options, not on other companies (like Microsoft). Reviews the year in a few minutes; Quickr, Lotus Notes/Domino 8/8.5, "Atlantic," and more. One thing you notice, if you've been watching, is that Bob is a very dymanic and exciting speaker. Just on that alone, I feel really good about the new leadership. Oh, and his wife is a Domino Developer. :-)
Coke comes on stage to tell their story. Explains their business, locations, and their people. Takes that and then points out how Lotus is able to allow them to innovate and collaborate. But through it all, they focus not on the technology, but on the information.
Jim Balsillie, from RIM, comes on stage. It's the 10th anniversary of the Blackberry device. He announces support for Domino 8.5. Despite the current economic woes, RIM doesn't see any downturn in his business. They have 21 million subscribers and see that growing in 2009 and beyond. "Lead the way in smartphone design." No mention of the iPhone, of course, so I am thinking it is the elephant in the room. Solution enhancements:
1. Blackberry client for Lotus Connections. 2.0.1 release shortly.
2. A Client for Sametime
3. Symphony and Quickr on Blackberry. Edit, download, and post documents.
4. Support for Domino Designer with XPages on the Blackberry. Domino developers=Blackberry developers
20th anniversary of Lotus Notes.
"Open and Simple" 3,000,000 downloads of Lotus Symphony. IBM is removing Office licenses from their workstations. Integration with the Lotus portfolio and view/edit a Symphony document on the Blackberry.
Adoption of Notes/Domino 8 is faster than any previous version.
Alloy, the new product name for "Atlantic," SAP and Notes/Domino integration. Planned availability is March. This will be HUGE.
Designer 8.5. XPages: flexibility and control to the browser. Create reusable custom controls. Develop for mobile devices, specifically with RIM. Using a Blackberry Storm, you see the same page rendered on the Blackberry. How cool is that? Like what was mentioned earlier, with XPages, you can be a Blackberry developer (somehow, I don't think that it is that easy, but still . . . . ).
Smartmarket: http://www.ibm.com/smartmarket A marketplace for ISV's and partners to put their applications/solutions in an easy web site.
A shot of the Lotus Protector appliance, but not much more. Okay, where is it and how much is it?
In addition to SmartMarket, IBM finally recognizes the community and is helping OpenNTF with templates and code. This will provide OpenNTF with immediate credibility with the greater Lotus community. Where some companies may be hesitant to use applications from that site, now, with IBM's backing, that argument will be moot.
Sametime will include a softphone. There are some really amazing features in Sametime. If you think that it is just IM, you don't know the product. Sametime 8.5 to be released this year. Support for iPhone is one of the features. Sametime Meeting will eliminate the need for Java applets and will work over HTTP. And will "fundamentally change" the way you use on-line meetings. Can create persistent meeting rooms. Industry standard reporting and logging. It is now a market leading platform. Remember kids, this runs on WAS, not Domino. Get your skills updated.
Social software. Lotus Connections and Quickr work "right out of the box." Hmmm. Lotus Connections 2.5: idea exchange, knowledge transfer, and more. Profiles will be able to aggregate information from any source (Flickr, Twitter, LinkedIn, and more). A new wiki! Integration with RIM to take this mobile.
Quickr 8.2 will be released shortly. Integrated with Connections, Mac and Linux support, personal file sharing, a wiki, and more. It looks like Quickr is growing up fast.
Portals and Mashups. Websphere Portal. Adding Ephox authoring tools to Portal. OpenAjax widgets. IBM Mashups Center. Can be used with or without Websphere Portal.3500 people have used Mashup Center without a lot of training videos or documentation. Seems that it is very easy for the developer.
:LotusLive Online solutions for Lotus products. Maximization of your Lotus investment. This is Bluehouse 2.0. A portfolio of social networking and collaboration services. Available to anyone. LotusLiive Engage. Lotus software in the cloud with integration to your mail (probably also hosted?). I'll need to spend some time with the LotusLive people this week to better understand this offering and how it is better than the old Bluehouse. Oh, you can use it in the cloud or within your network. "Click to Cloud." Move docs to the cloud, LotusLive Meetings, and more. Drag and drop to the cloud and integration with your Blackberry device. Damn cool stuff. With 3G, you can do voice and data. Salesforce.com, LinkedIn, and Skype are now partners in the LotusLive offering. Available to over 400 million people. I suppose that is the number of active users on those platforms, but they may not immediately use LotusLive. Nice number, though.
"Working Smarter Together" IBM wants to hear from the customers. Help Lotus show the world something about Lotus. We, the Lotusphere arttendees, have been invited to tape a video.
Elguji Software wins the CTO Award!!!!! Wow, that is HUGE.
