Clint Boulton, a writer for eWeek, attended a briefing last month with Bob Picciano, the new general manager of IBM's Lotus Software. Apparently, Clint loves to ask IBM management about the cloud approach to software as used by such vendors as Google, to drive attention away from Microsoft Office. In the article, Clint "translates" Picciano's statements. For example, Picciano says:
There is a high cost of managing the Microsoft environment. There are a lot of unattractive elements of managing a Microsoft proprietary stack, and people are growing tired and frustrated with the frequency of security patches and demands on their operating environment, and the increasing costs of maintenance and support.
To which Clint translates for us:
People use Google Apps because it's free and they don't have to manage it . . . Also, per the usual argument from IBM: Microsoft=closed and proprietary
I think that Picciano's comments speak highly of the Lotus Foundations and Blue Business Platform initiatives, when Boulton writes:
That said, Picciano said he believes the cloud approach when it comes to enterprise software works for SMBs that lack the infrastructure or IT wherewithal to support software on premises.
Interesting review of some comments made by Picciano.
