Chris Miller has posted a new IDoNotes podcast, Episode 50: Building a Strong Foundation. With him is Kevin Cavanaugh, Vice President Messaging & Collaboration, Lotus Software Group, to discuss Lotus Foundations, one of new announcements from Lotusphere 2008.
Chris engages Kevin in a good discussion of Lotus Foundations:
. . . a new family of software servers currently planned to provide the essential software that companies with five to 500 employees need to run their business.
Lotus Foundations will provide file management, directory services, backup and recovery, email, office productivity applications and integrated business applications -- ideal for the business with limited or no in-house technical resources.
It is basically an "SMB solution in a box." Available now, Kevin expects mid-2008 for a full portfolio of offerings for this brand. He fills in the blanks, providing you with a good idea of what it is and what to expect. IBM has been talking about serving the SMB market for a while, but this looks like they are finally delivering a product that delivers real value to that space.
This is a great, 40 minute podcast as Chris allows Kevin to expound on the product. If you feel that you need more information on this new offering, this is well worth a listen. Especially since the Foundations site is rather lacking in details (for now).
