While upgrading my wife's iTunes to the latest version (7.1.1.5), I couldn't help but notice one song on her Playlist that seemed, well, out of place. Bowling for Soup's "High School Never Ends." Listened to it a couple of times, and couldn't help but laugh. A lot of pop culture references in that song. But then there are the lines:
And you still listen to the same shit you did back then
High school never ends
This, after I just got done listening to Todd Rundgren's Hermit of Mink Hollow CD (which replaced the LP a few years back).
Do I still listen to the same sh*t as I did back then? Yep. But I wouldn't call it sh*t. Todd, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, old Bruce, Meatloaf, and much, much more. My iPod is chock full of that stuff. But it also includes newer artists, including Bowling for Soup (which I have turned my sons on to). My Play Count Top Ten songs are:
Stupify - Disturbed
Down with the Sickness - Disturbed
Ten Thousand Fists - Disturbed
For Those About to Rock - AC/DC
You Shook Me All Night Long - AC/DC
Lonely Train - Black Stone Cherry
Everything Zen - Bush
Fully Alive - Flyleaf
Cruel to Be Kind - Letters to Cleo
Control - Puddle of Mudd
Not one of those titles did I listen to in high school. I didn't discover AC/DC until college. You can see the influence that satellite radio has had on my listening, Black Stone Cherry and Flyleaf are both in rotation on Octane (Sirius Channel 20). And remember when I told you about my weakness for "teen movies?" Letters to Cleo was featured in "10 Things I Hate About You." If I was a little more energetic, I would get the real deal, Nick Lowe's version. Oh yeah, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds and Rockpile (okay, now I am dating myself - I have the LPs).
Not quite the same sh*t. But it's there. After all, it is a part of the soundtrack of my life. :-)
What about you?
