I took the family to the Cavs game this
evening, where they played the Indiana Pacers. The Cavs ended up winning,
99 to 88.
I have been to several games over the past few years, and at each I am struck by what I call "sensory overload." The big screen on the scoreboard, the ads for pretty much everything, the t-shirts and balls that get thrown into the stands, the rock music, the flames, the public address announcer, and so on. You can't really focus on any one thing for too long, as there is always something else vying for your attention. Am I that bored that I need that much stimulation? It is hard to concentrate on the game, as they want you to look at the replays on the scoreboard, but then, since it is really a giant TV, you find that you linger a bit, missing the action on the hardwood.
I am glad we went, but I am also glad to have left.
Contrast that with a high school game (it's been a long time since I attended a college game). It is all about the game. Kids having fun playing basketball. Other than a half time show, or a longer break in the action, the cheerleaders stay off to one side. The pep band plays during the breaks, but then goes silent when play resumes. I find that much more enjoyable.
And don't get me started on the pricing at the concession stands. High school? $1.50 for a 20 ounce soda. Pros? $3.50 or $4.00 for about the same. You have to find an ATM before getting into a concession line at a pro game. A soda, popcorn, and a hot dog came to about $15.00.
I've posted a couple of pictures of the game on Flickr. You can also see the Quicken Loans Arena scoreboard, with a point differential for the math challenged. Heavan forbid that you have to think for a minute about the point spread. :-)
BTW - I overhead a person behind me tell his friends that he just graduated from Muskingum College. I think that he was shocked that there was someone else in attendance that not only knew of Muskingum, but graduated from there. Yes, I had to say "Hi, I am a Muskingum graduate, too."
