It may come as a shock that sometimes backward compatibility in Notes/Domino isn't backward nor compatible. This is one of those times.
The Domino application servers are the responsibility of the application side of the house. As such, they are running Domino 5.0.7a in most cases, some of the other ones are running a flavor of Domino 6.5. A lot of applications are running on the older 5.0.7a servers and therein lies the problem. If you have a mail-in database using the old R5 mail template, and a user, who is running R6.5.4, goes to add/modify a Rule, they may get the Red Screen of Death (RSOD). The workaround that I suggested, and tested, is to replicate the database locally, make your changes to the Rules, and replicate it back to the server. This seems to work fine, without resulting in the RSOD. However, a look at the Lotus Support Site, also provided some background, and a workaround (which includes downgrading the Notes client to R5.0.11 (or less) or upgrading the server to R5.0.12).
What pops up in the RSOD? The lovely "Lookuphandle: null handle" error. *sigh*
A thought - move some applications, and mail-in databases to one of the R6.5.x servers. Especially the mail-in databases.

I don't want to be a party pooper here, Gregg, but I gotta go with the strategy that says "move to the version that is supported by IBM."
The R5.x codebase has been out of support for what... a year now?
We all know the server upgrade cycle is not a major undertaking in the Domino world. What's holding you back?

Simply, it is the application support area. For some reason, and I will have to revisit this, they are hesitant to upgrade. Manpower to test their apps, budget, laziness, I don't know. I'm with you, it isn't rocket science.

One issue that keeps some R5 shops from upgrading to 6 is the change to the ACL flag preventing users from replicating a database: in 6, this flag prevents them from printing documents as well.

Tim, I am not one to push tools, but you may want to look at Analyzer from Team Studio. It would really help with the applications that need to move as it looks for functionality that changed between versions. And it doesn't require any man power to test.
