Sad day for Gregg. I powered up my desktop today and my external Western Digital 250GB USB 2.0 hard drive was making "those clicking" sounds. It wouldn't be too bad if I didn't have my iTunes Library on that drive. *sigh*
The Western Digital hard drive utility can't see the drive, so that is out. And seeing as it is out of warranty, I may be in possession of new door stopper.
And before you ask, no, there isn't a backup, but I do know how to turn my iPod into a readable drive, so I don't think all is lost.
Maybe a backup device is something that I ought to consider.

Sad. I used PodUtil when I moved my iPod from pc to my new iMac. It worked and did the job. Here's a link to the pc version:

Best of luck!

Gregg,
This happened to me too. I was able to get most of my music back because a lot of it was burned from CD. But I was pleasantly surprised by how willing Apple was to let me re-download (at no charge) everything I had ever downloaded from iTunes. If you've lost a significant amout of purchased music, you might try emailing iTunes tech support.
