While we were gone in Amelia Island, my son decided to extend our wired network to his XBOX360 to go online. When he did that, he disconnected the Apple AirPort. Gone was all of the wireless internet access throughout the house. When I got back, I couldn't get the AirPort to connect to the internet nor could any of the machines in the house connect. That was bad. It took me a little while to configure the AirPort the first time, so I wasn't looking forward to working on this. But . . and this is key, one notebook in the house could never connect to the AirPort and I went and bought (but never installed) a Netgear WGT624.
Saturday, with the wife and kids gone, I took the time to remove the AirPort from the network and install the Netgear device. Installation went very smoothly, I locked it down, and got all of the wireless devices up and running in about an hour. I am sorry to see the AirPort go, as it was a very good looking/performing device (even though it was kinda old by today's standards).
When I brought up the Netgear device, I took the time to see who else in the neighborhood has a wireless network up. Quite a few people, and most are wide open. Other than mine, there is only one other one that is locked down. You could sit in the street and get some free internet. I didn't poke around to see if any of them have open shares, but I would imagine that they do, if their wireless is open. Not good. Maybe I should be a "good neighbor" and knock on a couple of doors? Physically, I mean, not virtually. :-)
