It wasn't Lotusphere, but hey, I had a speaking engagement today.
I spent about 40-45 minutes with a class of high school students today. I was invited to speak to them on the topic of "Web Site Design." Of course, all of my work is done in the corporate world, so that was the viewpoint I provided to them. This wasn't the first time that I have taken time to speak to high school students, so I was prepared for the lack of give and take and a minimum of questions. I know these kids have an opinion, on a lot of stuff, but try getting one to give it to you. Now, my kids give me all sorts of opinions, but in a classroom setting, it's hard to pull one out of them. I've always wondered about that.
Any way, I was happy to give them my opinion. Gave them a little intro to Lotus Notes/Domino, an overview of how we develop sites, and what corporate clients usually look for in a web site. Explained how most people go about creating a web site, the use of templates to keep the look and feel consistent, and the limited use of Flash on most sites. Finished with some examples of great sites so that they can click through a few and maybe get a feel for what corporations are looking for in a site. Usability was a key part of the presentation.
I hope that some of them took something away from this, except for a break from the syllabus. I'll have to follow up with one of the kids in the class, a good friend of my son's. No, there are no session evaluations when you do something like this. :-)
My thought to you: Volunteer some of your time to talk to the future.
