We've been working with S/MIME between one of our clients and a major customer of theirs. The implementation is pretty cool, as we are using LDAP to do lookups to get the e-mail addresses of the customer contacts and to get the keys.
One thing that was brought to my attention, and perhaps you can help explain. In Notes, to get the addresses and the keys you have to:
- Open you Personal Name and Address Book.
- Go to Advanced/Accounts and add the LDAP directory
- Use the Account (created above) to lookup in the Directory to get the user e-mail address and key.
- The user is added to your Contacts list, and from that point on, you can send S/MIME to that address.
In Outlook, however, it is "easier." From what I have been told, the user tells Outlook to look at the LDAP, when it does, the account/user information is then pulled and encrypted mail can be sent. It seems that to uninitiated (me) this is "easier." All of the testing and users are on Notes R6.0.2 and R6.5.4. I haven't been able to find if R7 or Hannover makes this easier for the Notes user. Anyone care to chime in on this?
