Twenty-five years ago today, John Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman. Like when man first stepped on the moon or the assassination of JFK, I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard the news.
That night, I was studying for an Economics exam (I think the term here is "pulling an all-nighter") at college. Got the radio on, the coffee brewing, and all of a sudden they start playing an inordinate amount of solo John Lennon music. It was during the breaks between the songs that I learned of his murder. And now, 25 years later, they are playing pretty much his entire catalog of music today. So, they play his music and I am transported back to that dark dorm room, with the desk lamp on, the Econ book and notes open, studying. Yes, I paused to think about this event, but knowing that the professor would probably not know about John Lennon nor care about the significance of his life, I kept going with the studying. It was certainly the topic of the day, December 9, and I was there.
Happily though, there is quite a catalog of music that lives on.
"... You may say I'm a dreamer,
but I'm not the only one,
I hope some day you'll join us,
And the world will live as one..."
