Big news making the rounds today, RIM has plans to support Lotus Instant Messaging (or Sametime) on their BlackBerry devices. This is pretty exciting, although early reviews of this service, which used Lotus Instant Messaging Everyplace, didn't really have a lot of "Wow Factor." I expect more out of this partnership. It will make those handhelds even more useful - instead of sending a mail message, you can now ping the person. And think of all of the heads that will be down, thumbs flying, checking not only e-mail, but now IM's. All while you are going over an important presentation, or in a meeting of some nature. Or driving.
Not to be outdone, Microsoft also announced an agreement with RIM with their IM product. But didn't they also have a "BlackBerry Killer" on the horizon? Or is that more FUD?
Industry pundits pontificating profusely:
CNet
eWeek
InformationWeek
If you are interested in wireless and want to know where it is going, directly from the industry itself, there is a conference going on right now in Florida. The presentations are posted here. Enjoy!
