Driving in today (I left later than normal because of some other things that needed to be done), I heard that there was a possibility that a new pope had been elected. By the time I got downtown, I heard the bells at St. John's ringing, so I figured that the elections were done and someone had been selected. Checked out MSNBC, and sure enough, white smoke was seen. Although I am not Catholic, it is amazing that for some, Pope John Paul II was the only pope that some people knew. 27 years, that is a long time. I am dating myself, but I remember when John Paul was elected. The other part of this that strikes me is the history behind the elections and the fact that even in this day and age of Palm devices, cell phones, the internet, and all of these other "advances," the election is announced with white smoke. For more on the history, you can go here. I am sure that there are better sites available, but that one will have to do for now.
