If you live, or work, in the Notes space, you know that Groove was recently purchased by Microsoft. It takes on a special significance since Ray was at Lotusphere this year, where he was recieved as a rock star, a prodigal son returning. Christopher Byrne sent some "Food for Thought" today. Christopher posed some very interesting questions, among them was, basically, if Microsoft had purchased Notes, as it wanted to do, would we still use the software even though it would now be a MS product. Frankly, I can't imagine us not using it. After all, it was, and still is, the category defining software for collaboration. We would have gravitated to it, regardless of who owned it. Did we leave after IBM bought it? But didn't IBM change the culture of Lotus, eventually? Yes, people left, but that is expected. But the Notes/Domino machine kept right on rolling. I don't think that it would have been any different had Microsoft bought it. Some of the tools that we use today would probably be different, like LotusScript, but the core functionality would be still be there. Then look at the Notes security model. I think that would have had a profound impact on other MS products. I don't think that you would see the issues that MS has now, if they had purchased Notes.
Finally, think about the market share, the number of seats that Notes would have now. All because of the weight and power of the MS name, early in the game.
But on the other hand, would Domino be running on the iSeries? Linux? Solaris? Unix/AIX? Very doubtful.
