On Wednesday, May 10, Google released a few new tools. One of the tools, Google Trends, looks at Google searches to determine how many searches have been done for certain terms relative to all searches. When Google Trends shows a spike in the volume, it then labels the graph and puts a news story that happened that day as a link to the right of the graph.
Here are two trends that I performed. The first Lotus Domino Microsoft Exchange, gives us this graph:

The second search, Lotus Notes Microsoft Outlook, brings the lines really close together.

The latter graph shows, if I am understanding this correctly, that while it appears that Outlook gets more press/searches than Notes, the two products are running pretty much neck and neck. At least according to Google Search and Google News. From what Google shows on their Trends Help screen, these searches do not crawl blogs. That is unfortunate.
The fun part of the Lotus Notes Microsoft Outlook trend is when you adjust the date. When you pick only January 2006, see how much activity there is for Lotus Notes. Wonder why? :-) That just confirms, to me, that IBM and the Business Partners are using Lotusphere to really promote the Lotus brand as well as to release new products. This is a tool that PR and marketing people should love.
(this is the first time I've embedded graphics in a blog entry, so this will prove to be an interesting test).
